Being a Lifelong Homeowner in Cape Coral
I’ve called Cape Coral home for over 30 years, and while I can’t imagine living anywhere else, life here comes with challenges that only longtime residents truly understand. This city has given me countless memories—family barbecues by the canals, fishing trips at sunrise, and the simple joy of watching the sun melt into the Gulf every evening. But it’s also tested me as a homeowner in Cape Coral time and time again with the hurricanes that come barreling through our community.
Every storm brings back the same routine: boarding up windows, hauling patio furniture inside, and waiting in long gas lines with neighbors who are just as anxious as I am. No matter how many times I’ve done it, the feeling in the pit of my stomach never changes. When the winds finally arrive, the sound is like nothing else—the house groans, the trees whip, and all you can do is hope the roof holds and the water doesn’t find its way inside.
The real struggle begins after the storm passes. I’ve walked out to see fences flattened, shingles scattered down the street, and water creeping where it doesn’t belong. Being a homeowner here means facing repairs that insurance doesn’t always cover and waiting weeks—or months—for help to come through. It’s frustrating and exhausting, but somehow you push forward.
What keeps me here is the resilience of Cape Coral itself. After every hurricane, neighbors check on each other, share generators, cook together, and remind one another that we’re not alone. Over the years, I’ve learned that hurricanes may batter our homes, but they can’t break our community. Living here is a balance of paradise and hardship, but to me, it’s always been worth it. Cape Coral isn’t just where I live—it’s where I’ve built my life, through calm and storm alike.
