How to Prepare for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season in Florida typically runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, and preparation can be key to minimizing damage and promoting safety. With the state’s vulnerability to powerful storms, residents must take proactive steps each year.
Tips to Prepare for Hurricanes in Florida
Consider the following tips to prepare for hurricane season in Florida:
- Create an emergency plan. Start by developing a family emergency plan. Know your evacuation routes, designate a meeting place, and confirm that all family members understand the plan. Keep emergency contact numbers and nearby shelter information easily accessible.
- Build a hurricane kit. Stock up on essentials such as nonperishable food, water (1 gallon per person per day for at least three days), flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, medications and essential documents in waterproof containers. Don’t forget supplies for pets.
- Secure your home. Trim trees, clear gutters and secure outdoor furniture. Install storm shutters or board up windows. Consider investing in a generator and reinforcing garage doors to withstand high winds.
- Review and update insurance coverage. One of the most critical steps is verifying you have the right insurance. Standard homeowners insurance typically doesn’t cover flood damage, which is common during hurricanes. Evaluate purchasing standalone flood insurance via the National Flood Insurance Program or private insurers. Review your coverage limits and deductibles, and verify that windstorm protection is included.
- Stay informed. Monitor weather updates from trusted sources like the National Hurricane Center. Sign up for local alerts and have a battery-powered radio on hand in case of power outages.
